OUR STORY

For over a century, Emmanuel Church has stood as a steadfast beacon in the Johnstown area, shaping lives and communities through the unchanging message of the Gospel. Generations have walked through its doors, drawn into the story of God’s redemption, encountering His grace, and discovering their place in His unfolding narrative. From humble beginnings to a vibrant, multi-generational congregation, Emmanuel has not only shared the hope of Christ but has also lived it, impacting neighborhoods, schools, families, and hearts, inviting every person to step into the greater story of God’s kingdom.

FOUNDED IN FAITH

That’s what 37 believers prayed on July 15, 1896, when they officially formed Emmanuel Baptist Church in Johnstown. Led by Rev. B.F. Quigg, these early pioneers named the church “Emmanuel”, meaning God with us, and rooted it in the Word of God and bold faith. They faced hardship with hope, clinging to Christ through floods, trials, and transitions. Their faith became the foundation for generations to come.

"We can truly testify that after all these years, God has been with us."

ROOTED AND RESILIENT

Through early pastoral leadership and faithful laypeople, Emmanuel grew in strength and impact. Women like Mrs. Josephine Gundlach and others helped launch ministries and Bible classes that shaped lives. In 1936, the congregation broke ground on a beautiful new building, a visible marker of God’s faithfulness in the heart of Johnstown. Through world wars and societal shifts, the church stood as a light in the darkness.

“They had a 'nip and tuck' faith, forged in trial, tested in fire, and proven strong.”

A LIGHTHOUSE OF TRUTH

The post-war years brought energy, evangelism, and expansion. Under leaders like Rev. Ray H. Streets, Emmanuel continued preaching Christ with conviction and compassion. Young men and women were raised up to serve as pastors and missionaries, sent from Emmanuel into fields across the world. The sanctuary echoed with Scripture and song, drawing people into worship and the Word.

“The church continued to raise up young people who surrendered their lives for full-time service.”

BUILT TO BLESS

In the early 2000s and into the next two decades, Emmanuel Church continued to grow, not just in numbers, but in heart, mission, and community presence. New building projects expanded our capacity for worship, kids’ ministry, youth gatherings, and community outreach. But the true growth wasn’t just in square footage, it was in lives changed. From city streets to surrounding schools and neighborhoods, Emmanuel became known as a church that shows up, serves well, and shines the light of Christ with love and truth.

“We didn’t just build buildings, we built bridges to the broken, the searching, and the lost.”

Rooted in over 125 years of faithfulness, the church is now focused on being a spiritual aircraft carrier, launching disciples into everyday mission across the Route 219 corridor and beyond. With a passion to Gather, Grow, and Go, Emmanuel is equipping individuals and families to live sent in their homes, neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces. The future is bright, and we believe the best is still to come.
